Grace Earns Big East Honors

TAMPA - University of South Florida senior guard Shantia Grace was named to the All-Big East first-team Thursday.

Grace leads the Bulls in scoring (15.1 points) and assists (4.4). Grace, the only Bull selected to the All-Big East teams, was a second-team All-Big East pick as a sophomore and junior.

The Bulls (21-9) open the Big East Tournament Saturday at 2 p.m. against today's Marquette-Cincinnati winner. The USF game will be televised on BrightHouse Sports Network, Ch. 47, in Tampa.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Takia Starks and Tanisha Smith scored 18 points each and Texas A&M (23-5, 11-4 Big 12) got its fifth straight win, cruising to victory over Oklahoma State (15-13, 4-11).

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Shekinna Stricklen scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, and Tennessee (21-9) pulled away for a win over Alabama (13-17) in the first round of the SEC tournament.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Aisha Mohammed had 16 points and 16 rebounds to help Virginia (23-8) beat Virginia Tech (12-18) in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

BOSTON COLLEGE 76,

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Carolyn Swords scored 16 of her 20 points in the second half to lead Boston College (20-10) past Miami 76-59 in the first round of the ACC tourney.

Boston College shot 53 percent in defeating the Hurricanes (13-17), and advanced to face 12th-ranked Florida State, the second seed, today.

Stanford Upsets Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz. - Landry Fields scored 20 points and Stanford defeated No. 21 Arizona State 74-64, the Sun Devils' third straight loss.

Anthony Goods scored 15 points, Lawrence Hill added 13 and Kenny Brown had 12 for the Cardinal (17-11, 6-11 Pac-10), who avenged a 30-point loss to Arizona State (21-8, 10-7) in January.

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Scottie Reynolds scored 23 points and helped Villanova (25-6, 13-5) finish a perfect season at the Pavilion and earn a double-bye in the Big East tournament with a victory over Providence (18-12, 10-8).

CINCINNATI - Dante Jackson scored Xavier's first 11 points for a lead that held, and the Musketeers (24-5, 12-3) beat Dayton (24-6, 10-5) for their third straight Atlantic 10 regular-season championship.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Talor Battle hit a driving shot with 0.3 seconds left to cap Penn State's rally from a 10-point deficit and give the Nittany Lions (21-9, 10-7 Big Ten) a victory over Illinois (23-8 11-7).

The Illini's Mike Davis missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 8 seconds left. Jamelle Cornley corralled the rebound and handed off to Battle, who dribbled furiously up court and threw up the shot that bounced tantalizingly around the rim for a couple of seconds before dropping in.

Tampa's Callaway, Messina Honored

ORLANDO - The University of Tampa's Rashad Callaway and Gianna Messina were named to the 2008-09 All-Sunshine State Conference men's and women's basketball first teams.

Callaway ranks as UT leading scorer while averaging 18.2 points per game. Messina, a former Holy Names standout, led UT to the program's third SSC regular season championship while leading the Spartans in points (13.6), rebounds (6.8) and assists (94).
