The Transportation Security Administration has informed 17 airports, including Orlando International Airport and Tallahassee Regional Airport, that they are being considered for improved checked baggage screening technology under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The projects would be funded by $1 billion allocated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for in aviation security projects to be funded under act designed to stimulate job creation.

The TSA said in November it phased in various methods of screening packages and other containers carried in air cargo holds on flights at Tampa International Airport, St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport and elsewhere.

Tampa International Airport is seeking from $6 million to $12 million in federal stimulus funds through the Federal Aviation Administration for a new taxiway and site development for the proposed north terminal.
