HISTORIC HYDE PARK - The seventh annual Historic Hyde Park Home Tour is today, with some of the proceeds benefiting a Veterans of Foreign Wars post in the neighborhood.

About 25 percent of money contributed will go to Capt. Russel P. Harris/Rudy J. Santacruz VFW Post 4321's ongoing renovations from a fire in October 2007 that destroyed much of the building at 2010 W. Morrison Ave.

Construction costs alone have exceeded the post's $268,000 settlement with its insurer. This year's home tour donation will go toward landscaping at the post. Donations are still being sought for furnishings, including kitchen appliances, furniture and lighting fixtures.

The tours start at the Kate Jackson Community Center. For tickets and information, go to www.historichometours.com or www.ehydepark.org.

Those who complete the workshop can volunteer at the sanctuary.

The event is being sponsored by the Pre-Veterinary Organization at USF St. Petersburg.

Richey Elementary School Celebrates 50 Years

NEW PORT RICHEY - The faces change from year to year, about as fast as the style of the clothes the students wear.

The students and even the teachers come and go.

The curriculum evolves, as do the teaching methods.

But through it all, a school is one of those institutions that define a community.

Richey Elementary School has been part of New Port Richey for 50 years, longer if you consider classes were held there in 1957 before the building was officially opened for the start of the 1958-59 school year.

Staff members are celebrating the school's golden anniversary.

"We're still deciding exactly what we're going to do," said Kim Stratman, part of the six-member committee organizing the celebration. The plan is to have an event in May, near the end of the school year.

The committee would like to hear from anyone who attended Richey Elementary from 1958 to 1990. Organizers are looking for former students who can share stories, photos and mementos from their time at the school.

For information, call Stratman at (727) 774-3500 or e-mail kstratma@pasco.k12.fl.us.
