ZEPHYRHILLS - A landfill proposed south of Dade City would jeopardize the quality of water pumped to fill the Zephyrhills bottles sold in stores, the bottling company says.
Nestle Waters North America Inc. filed a petition with the Department of Environmental Protection asking for a state hearing on the agency's recent denial of a landfill permit to Largo-based Angelo's Aggregate Materials.
Angelo's has asked the Department of Administrative Hearings to overrule the DEP's denial.
In its petition, Nestle Water says it is concerned Angelo's proposed landfill could pollute the groundwater Nestle Water taps at Crystal Springs south of Zephyrhills.
The "viability of Crystal Springs as a long-term source of high quality water for human consumption would be in jeopardy if the landfill is constructed," Nestle Water officials said in their petition.
Angelo's Aggregates, which owns a construction debris landfill near Enterprise and Auton roads south of Dade City, spent nearly three years trying to win approval for a household garbage landfill on 90 acres nearby.
On Feb. 12, the DEP told Angelo's it planned to deny the permit for the new landfill based on concerns that sinkholes could open beneath it, leading garbage to pollute underground water.
This week, Angelo's asked a state administrative judge for a hearing.
Angelo's defends its landfill designs, saying the garbage within the landfill would be separated from the surrounding environment by twin manmade liners and a thick clay layer.
