Sarasota Deputy Shoots Man Near Siesta Key

SARASOTA - The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a deputy shot a man at about 9:17 p.m. Saturday in the Siesta Key area.

According to a sheriff's report:

The girlfriend of Chason Mass, 31, no known address, said he was suicidal, and he was found near 1200 Old Stickney Point Road.

Mass, had an object that appeared to be a gun in his waistband and began to pull it out, deputies said. Deputies then drew their weapons and shot him, according to the report.

Mass was taken by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center. Authorities did not identify the officers involved.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the victim of the shooting.

The investigation is continuing.
