I inherited my pair of chairs after they had been sitting in an attic. Unfortunately, the upholstery is in bad condition. I love the elegant lines, but wonder whether they are worth re-upholstering and whether that would hurt the value. They are marked by "Cochran Chair Co., Aurora, Ind."

The reported life dates of Cochran Chair Co. vary, but it seems to be agreed upon that the company was founded around 1879 and went out of business about 1973. It specialized in the manufacture of chairs and tables.
This pair of chairs probably was manufactured during the late 1950s or early '60s. The style appears to have been partly based upon early French designs.
Because they are not early antiques, new upholstery will not hurt the value. The chairs are interesting remnants of the mid-20th century. The cost-benefit of having the work done is up to you. The pair would retail for around $100.
What can you tell me about a lamp inherited from my grandmother? It is electric and both the shade and the base have colored glass panels mounted in a metal framework. It is in excellent condition. There are no marks. I was told that it is worth $3,000.

This nice slag glass lamp was manufactured during the late 1920s or early '30s. It appears to be in great condition with the original painted finish on the shade and matching base.
Many factories made similar lamps, including Bradley & Hubbard, Edward Miller & Co., and Pittsburgh Lamp, Glass and Brass Co. Some lamps are marked, but many are not.
Slag glass is a term used to describe opaque glass with colored streaks, usually made of flat glass (often bent into panels for lamps). It was very popular from 1890 to 1930.
This lamp would retail for around $550.
