Rescuers evaluated two adults and two children who jumped overboard Sunday night to escape a burning boat north of the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
The group swam ashore at about 9:30 and was evaluated by paramedics.
The boat, a 25-foot Sea Ray, was burning about 200 feet north of the causeway and a mile west of Rocky Point. A Tampa fire boat was called to douse the flames.
Fire officials say the four people live along the water and were heading home when their vessel ran aground on a sandbar. They managed to free the boat but then it became caught on another sandbar.
While trying to throttle up the engine to dislodge the vessel, the engine caught fire.
The two adults and two children jumped overboard and swam to shore.
Injuries to the four were minor, described as scrapes possibly from rocks, oyster beds or barnacles.
The Coast Guard and Tampa Fire Department are investigating.
No further information about the people or their relationship was available.
