An electrical fire destroyed a home at 1205 E. 15th Avenue in Tampa early Sunday morning.
Shortly before 1:20 a.m., firefighters arrived at the house and reported smoke and flames coming from the one-story home, according to a news release from Tampa Fire Rescue.
Firefighters were able to control the fire in less than 30 minutes and keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes, which they said were only a few feet from the flames.
According to the release:
Thomasina Daymon, 30, and her five sleeping children, ranging from 2 to 10 years old, were in the house while Daymon's husband was at work. Daymon was in her bedroom watching television when the power in the house went out.
A neighbor, Elizabeth Howard, looked out her bedroom window and saw Daymon's house on fire.
Howard went outside and yelled for help while another person began knocking on Daymon's door. Daymon noticed smoke and flames in a room at the rear of the home, and was able to gather her children and get out of the house safely.
An electrical wire under the home shorted out and started the fire, according to investigators.
The house was destroyed by the fire with damage estimated at more than $100,000. Daymon rents the home and has no insurance.
The American Red Cross is providing the family with temporary shelter, the release said.
No one was injured and no other homes were damaged by the fire.
