After starting 30 minutes late, Jessica Simpson kicked off her set Sunday night at the Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City with a confident attitude performing "These Boots Are Made For Walking."
Given her recent lyrical mishaps and emotional breakdowns on stage, Simpson gave a show that wasn't marked by any disasters. It wasn't remarkable at all, really.
Simpson has made the move from pop artist to country music songstress, so cutting a country album falls fairly low on the surprise scale for someone who's played up the southern belle act.
Her show ran largely along the track of her career, starting off with early pop songs, like "With You" and a not-so-great version of "Angels," before moving to songs from her latest country album, "Do You Know," which included "Pray Out Loud" and "Come On Over."
At times her voice was squeaky and out of tune, high notes seeming almost as if she were shouting them. In between songs, Simpson liked to chat and/or give advice to the audience about faith, relationships and what she referred to as "random moments of silliness." This has caused her some ridicule in the past, but the festival crowd responded well.
Just before singing "You're My Sunday," Simpson put rumors of her breakup with Tony Romo, quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, to rest. She told the audience how great their relationship is and how they have ups and downs like everyone else.
One of her better moments came when she covered the song "Son of a Preacher Man" by Dusty Springfield. It showed her soulful side, which seemed the most vocally comfortable for her all night.
