TAMPA - A Riverview man tried strangling his girlfriend with a telephone cord, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Jason John Oquendo, 29, was arrested Sunday. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder, battery, tampering with a victim and four counts of kidnapping.
The incident began Sunday morning when Oquendo pushed his girlfriend down the stairs, an arrest report states. She dialed 911, but he broke two phones so she couldn't speak to investigators. He then wrapped the phone cord around her neck.
When deputies arrived, Oquendo forced his girlfriend and her three children upstairs and locked them in a bedroom, the report states. He told his girlfriend he would kill her.
Deputies got into the home through an unlocked rear door, and Oquendo told his girlfriend to go downstairs and tell investigators he was gone. Investigators found him hiding behind a desk.
Oquendo's girlfriend had redness and bruising around her neck but declined medical treatment.
Oquendo remained in Orient Road Jail today. No bail has been set.
