The producers of "American Idol" had to scramble to come up with a solution to a troublesome phone problem that could have had fans calling in to a sex line.
Apparently, a new G-rated phone number will be revealed on tonight's show for the 13th performer, according to an "Idol" producer who appeared on Ryan Seacrest's radio show this morning.
When there were only 12 performers, the "Idol" call-in numbers were no problem. Those numbers are 1-866-IDOLS-01 through 1-866-IDOLS-12.
The 13th number followed in sequence is 1-866-IDOLS-13 which directs the caller to Intimate Encounters, a phone-sex service where a recording by a woman offers salacious ladies waiting to talk for up to $3.99 a minute.
"Hey there sexy guy, welcome to an exciting new way to go live one on one with hot horny girls waiting right now to talk to you …" the recording says.
Fox has not responded yet to media queries about the problem. But producer Megan Michaels told Seacrest that "We will not allude to the fact of [IDOLS]-13, because we don't want to endorse that."
