Grady Transfers To Armwood
Sophomore Josh Grady, who has served as Freedom's starting quarterback the past two years, has transferred to Armwood, Hawks coach Sean Callahan confirmed Monday.
Grady threw for 1,815 yards in 2008, the sixth-most in Hillsborough County last season. He also threw nine touchdowns and nine interceptions for the Patriots, who finished 4-6.
As a freshman, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Grady threw for 632 yards and eight TDs after taking over the starting role midway through the 2007 season.
BASEBALL: Spoto coach Larry Benton has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation into three separate undisclosed incidents.
Spoto Principal Clyde Trathowen, who is conducting the investigation, said Monday all three incidents occurred within the past couple weeks. He would not discuss the incidents in detail, saying only that the incidents were similar to incidents that occurred last year as well.
"It's nothing serious; not like some of the things that have happened recently regarding teachers. It's basically procedure-type things with students and decisions for the team," said Trathowen, who added he hopes to have the investigation completed by today. "I'm doing this for his protection. I want to make sure we do things right."
Benton, who has been Spoto's coach since the program began three years ago, declined to speak in detail when reached Monday, and he said he's just waiting for the investigation to be completed.
"I don't know what's going to happen at this point in time. I'm just not sure. I guess I just need to wait and see," Benton said. "Of course I'm hopeful. I just have to let Trathowen do his investigation and see what comes out of it."
Trathowen called Benton "a great coach" and added that he spoke to Benton on Monday. Trathowen said he couldn't say with certainty that Benton would resume his coaching duties, but he added he has not asked for Benton's resignation.
RECRUITING: Robinson players David Canchola, a running back and linebacker, and Mike Hawthorne, a defensive back and receiver, have signed with NAIA school Belhaven College in Jackson, Miss.
The two landed with Belhaven following a meeting with Blazers coaches at last month's college recruiting fair at East Bay High.
"This is a real positive thing for our program and it all came out of the recruiting fair," Robinson coach Mike DePue said. "Here's two guys with pretty good academics and athletic ability who will be able to continue playing the game in college thanks to the fair."
BASKETBALL: Some of the top boys and girls basketball players in Hillsborough County will participate in two all-star games this weekend.
The 24th annual Wilkes & McHugh United Negro College Fund All-Star Basketball Game Classic will be at Jefferson High on Friday. The girls game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game and a 3-point shooting and dunk contest. Tickets are $5.
On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., Tampa Prep will host the Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association East vs. West Boys Basketball All-Star Game, which will also feature a dunk contest. Players expected to participate include King senior forward and Georgia Southern signee Toarlyn Fitzpatrick, who recently led the Lions to the Class 5A state final four; Tampa Prep senior guard Jake Haslam, who helped Tampa Prep reach the 2A state final four; and Berkeley Prep senior guards and Division I recruits Johnathan Gray and Austin Suarez, who took the state-ranked Buccaneers to the 3A region playoffs.
