TAMPA - At a time when it seems every company is slashing jobs, here's some encouraging news: Nearly 700 new jobs are coming to Lakeland.
And 90 of those positions are open right now.
Colorado-based WellDyneRX chose Lakeland for its new 66,000-square-foot facility and plans to hire pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, call center professionals and those in information technology. The average salary: $45,000.
"During this period of tough economic times, it is especially rewarding to be involved in a business that is creating new employment opportunities," said Damien Lamendolo, president and CEO.
About 35 people work at the Lakeland center now, and the company plans to hire 90 more before the end of the year. In 2010, the company plans to add 578 more jobs.
The jobs are great news for Lakeland, said Rodney Carson, director of economic development for the Central Florida Development Council. "These are the exact kinds of jobs Polk County needs," Carson said. "It was very humbling for us that they chose Lakeland."
In addition to the opening of the facility, Polk County received more good economic news Monday: Tampa Electric said it was building one of the nation's largest solar power plants, employing 200 construction jobs temporarily and 20 permanent jobs in 2011.
