TAMPA - New University of South Florida defensive coordinator Joe Tresey was brought in to help the Bulls maintain their status as one of the nation's top defenses.
An added bonus, however, is what Tresey can do for the USF offense, led by new coordinator Mike Canales.
"Joe and I have spent a lot of time talking on the phone. And now that he's here, we're talking about what his scouting report was on us was and what his thoughts were and how he prepared for us," Canales said. "It's kind of neat to run those ideas back and forth toward each other and know what he saw. It better helps us in terms of what we're going to do in game preparation next season and what we think people are going to try to stereotype us as."
Tresey has hit the ground running since being hired last week.
"We've been on a crash course," he said. "It is football, though, and it comes down to fundamentals and being good at what you do. It's an evaluation time. We have to see our strengths and weaknesses. We have to see what kids can do what. But their attitude, their demeanor and their work ethic are outstanding."
Despite the two new coordinators, Bulls coach Jim Leavitt says don't expect too much of a difference.
"We're running pretty much the same defense we ran before and pretty much a similar offense to what we did before," Leavitt said. "So not much different. Just different guys doing a little bit of hollering."
