ST. PETERSBURG - Two men accused of stealing a washer, dryer and other appliances from a St. Petersburg home this afternoon caused two car crashes as they fled from deputies, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

One crash occurred when the stolen appliances fell off the bed of the suspects' pickup truck.

The men were arrested after their 1994 Ford F-150 collided with a utility post on 38th Avenue.

Deputies were responding to a burglary call about 1:55 p.m. at 4231 Tyler Circle and spotted the suspects' vehicle at 72nd Street and 33rd Avenue, the sheriff's office said. They tried to stop the truck, but the men inside—driver Daniel Lombardi and passenger John Aparicio—fled east on 38th.

Traffic was backed up west of the intersection of 66th Street, deputies say, so Lombardi drove over the raised concrete median but struck a street sign. The washer and dryer fell off and landed on a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Deneen Luster, who was not injured.

The Ford then went east on westbound 38th and struck a white minivan driven by Mariah Fox before crashing into a utility pole.

Fox and Aparicio both suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals, the sheriff's office said.

Lombardi was not injured. He was charged with burglary, grand theft, possession of burglary tools, fleeing and eluding, and reckless driving. Aparicio was charged with burglary, grand theft and possession of burglary tools.

Lombardi was booked this afternoon at Pinellas County Jail.
