A dolphin that stranded itself on Longboat Key on Wednesday morning later died at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota.
The male dolphin, which laboratory staff had nicknamed "Willis," was in critical condition when it arrived at Mote Marine, spokeswoman Nadine Slimak said in a statement. It was about 6 feet long and 100 pounds.
Beachgoers and staff from the Longboat Key Club alerted Mote marine biologists and veterinarians to the stranded dolphin, Slimak said.
There are more than 30,000 pantropical spotted dolphins in the northern Gulf and the species typically is found in large groups.
