A Pinellas sheriff's narcotics detective accidentally shot a 43-year-old woman this morning in St. Petersburg as he and other detectives were bursting through a door to a home, Pinellas sheriff's authorities say.

The woman, Brenda McKay, who was lying on a couch at the time, was shot in the upper right thigh, said Pinellas sheriff's Sgt. Jim Border. She was transported to Bayfront Medical Center for what was described as a non-life-threatening injury.

The identity of the detective was not released because he sometimes works in an undercover capacity.

Narcotics detectives had just executed one search warrant at 3611 Second Ave. S. – arresting Lewis Pratt, 34, and seizing crack cocaine, marijuana and at least one gun - when a team tried executing a second search warrant at 3635 15th Ave. S., Bordner said.

After bursting through the front door, the first detective on the team to enter unintentionally discharged his department-issue .45-caliber Glock handgun, with a bullet striking McKay, Bordner said. The shooting occurred about 8:05 a.m.

Several shooting investigations are under way, and narcotics detectives will have to wait until those are finished before they can serve the search warrant, Bordner said.
