What To Do This Week

Fertilize landscape plants and lawn. Shop for a fertilizer that contains slow- or controlled-release nitrogen. To determine the correct amount to use, divide the first number on the fertilizer bag (nitrogen) into 100. Apply this amount per 1,000 square feet of lawn and landscape area. Example: 16-4-8 (16 divided into 100 equals 6 pounds of fertilizer per 1,000 square feet). Broadcast over the soil or mulch, and water.

Spray scab-susceptible citrus trees, including Murcott, Temple and Page varieties. Scab results in brown, corky areas on the leaves and peel. Spray a copper fungicide when new growth emerges and again when the plants are nearly finished blooming.

Pinch out growing tips and old blooms of annuals. To increase branching and flowering, remove one-half to 1 inch of tip growth from each stem. Flowering annuals produce blooms on new growth.
