TAMPA - Joe Hudson went 3-for-3 with a home run, and Daniel Gibson tossed six strong innings Wednesday to lead Jesuit to a 3-1 victory against Plant in a Class 5A-District 10 matchup at Paul Straub Field.
"Beating Plant tonight was huge," Hudson said. "They're our rival. They're slowly emerging as our top rival, because Tampa Catholic is going down the ladder. All around, a great team effort."
Jesuit jumped out quickly against Plant ace Mychal Givens, scratching out a run in each of the first three innings. Greg Dupell had a run-scoring single in the first, Nick Lockwood an RBI double in the second and Hudson added a homer in the third to stake the Tigers (9-0) to a 3-1 lead.
Meanwhile, Gibson limited the Panthers (5-2) to four hits and saved his best for his final inning of work, striking out the side in the sixth after Givens and Jake Lowe (2-for-3, RBI) reached on consecutive singles to start the inning. Gibson finished with four strikeouts.
"They got the first two hitters on base, and automatically their confidence and their ambitions of winning the game increased," Hudson said. "Him coming back with three straight strikeouts, there's nothing they can do about that, and right away that just extinguished what they thought that they might come back."
