Gus Van Sant directed Sean Penn to a Best Actor Oscar in this biopic of crusading politician Harvey Milk, who in the late 1970s became the first openly gay man to hold public office in this country. Dustin Lance Black's Oscar-winning screenplay follows its hero from middle-age awakening to his early death at the hands of a fellow San Francisco official. The cast includes Emile Hirsch.

Anne Hathaway steps out of her princess/clotheshorse/slapstick persona for a darker (and Oscar-nominated) turn as Kym, a recovering addict who is allowed to leave treatment to attend the wedding of her sister Rachel. Jonathan Demme directs with compassion and insight, exploring the ties of love and pain that tend to surface at such family gatherings.

Seann William Scott and Paul Rudd play the chronologically adult but cinematically juvenile pitchmen for an energy drink called Minotaur. Sentenced to community service, the two pay their debt to society by mentoring wayward youths: foul-mouthed Ronnie and Augie, who lives for his live-action medieval role-playing game. Aside from the sappy ending, this comedy delivered laughs.
