TAMPA - A Tampa man was arrested Wednesday night after refusing to pull over for a deputy and sideswiping two vehicles, including a patrol car, as he drove from Hillsborough to Pinellas County, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
Jeremy Heard, 19, of 2004 E. 140th Ave., Apt. 9, Tampa, crashed the 1995 Honda he was driving into a utility pole at Langdon Avenue and Jordan Park Street in St. Petersburg, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said in a written statement.
Heard was charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and driving with a suspended or revoked license. He was also on probation for felony fleeing and eluding, Carter said.
A deputy tried to stop Heard about 9 p.m. at 143rd and 12th streets for having a malfunctioning headlight, Carter said. The Honda did not stop but continued to drive slowly for several blocks until Heard stopped the car and a passenger got out.
A pursuit didn't start until a second deputy saw the Honda on Interstate 275 and noticed bullet holes in the car, Carter said. Heard saw the patrol car and sideswiped the deputy, she said.
The deputy was sideswiped a second time as the cars went over the Howard Frankland Bridge, Carter said. During the chase, a motorist's vehicle was also hit by the Honda, but did not stop and drove away from the scene.
Deputies arrested Heard when his car crashed into a utility pole in St. Petersburg. A loaded handgun was found in the front door panel of the car, Carter said.
Heard was booked Wednesday night at the Pinellas County Jail.
