LAND O' LAKES - The Pasco County Sheriff's Office is realizing savings through a sewing program.
In October, the sheriff's office Detention Support Services Unit started a sewing program to provide a vocational skill to inmates while cutting overhead costs. Inmates make in-house repairs to cracked and torn mattresses. To date, 50 mattresses, 100 pillows and 232 pillowcases made from scrap materials have been recovered, providing an estimated savings of $2,054.
The sewing program is expected to expand into the making of sheets, which will be an additional way to cut costs. The savings could be more than $8,000, a news release stated, for the estimated annual replacement of 6,000 sheets and pillowcases.
In addition, the Detention Support Services Unit sells wooden delivery pallets acquired by Land O' Lakes Jail and is beginning to sell cardboard bales. Sales in 2008 amounted to $4,271.
