FSU Will Address NCAA Sanctions

Published: March 12, 2009

TALLAHASSEE - Florida State University President T.K. Wetherell will hold a news conference Tuesday to address sanctions handed down by the NCAA Committee on Infractions for academic-misconduct violations involving 61 student-athletes and three former FSU employees. Wetherell and the university took issue with one particular sanction in which FSU has been told to vacate records in 10 sports in which ineligible student-athletes participated.

Wetherell told the Tallahassee Democrat this week that he first wanted to discuss the sanctions before moving forward with an appeal.

"I think the first step is that we're going to have a conversation with them to find out what exactly they mean by ineligible players, for instance," Wetherell said.

He added: "We would never knowingly play an ineligible student-athlete. .... Per our conversation with NCAA during FSU's investigating and interviewing process, we sat players out of games the minute we found out they were involved. ... We're not sure that there were any ineligible players playing."

Brother Of Bulls LB Shot, Killed

TAMPA - Kellon H. Wilson, the 25-year old brother of University of South Florida starting middle linebacker Kion Wilson, was shot and killed Saturday in Miami.

"My heart goes out to Kion and his family," USF coach Jim Leavitt said in a statement. "This is a very difficult situation and we are completely supportive of his family during this time."

According to a Miami police report, Wilson was involved in an argument as "a result of a relationship the victim had with the wife of the suspect that fired the deadly shot, Louis Lee Bradshaw."

Bradshaw was arrested on first-degree murder charges and his wife, Christina Steward-Bradshaw, was arrested for accessory after the fact.

In an interview with The Tampa Tribune in September, Kion Wilson said when he was a teenager his mother moved the family, including seven other brothers and sisters, to Jacksonville to escape the bad influences of Miami.

In other USF news, Clemson defensive tackles coach David Blackwell will interview for USF's linebackers coach position, CUTigers.com reported.

Blackwell, 37, has been at Clemson the past six seasons as linebackers coach until being moved to defensive tackles this spring. He also was linebackers coach at Pittsburgh from 2000-02.
