Wesley Chapel's Joyer Sets County Record
WESLEY CHAPEL - Kamran Joyer set Pasco County, school and family records Wednesday during the Wesley Chapel High Dual Weightlifting Meet.
Joyer, who was ninth at state in the heavyweight class in 2008, had a 425-pound bench press and a 300-pound clean and jerk for a 725 pound total. The senior, who has a scholarship to play football at the University of South Florida, broke brother Hunter's county and school records. Hunter Joyer, who was second in the state in the 238-pound class last year, had a 720-pound total record. Hunter, a sophomore, cannot compete in weightlifting this season due to a chest injury.
It was only the second meet of the season for Wesley Chapel. The state weightlifting meet will be April 25 at New Port Richey River Ridge High School.
Joyer's previous records were 410 pounds on the bench press, 280 pounds in the clean and jerk and 690 total.
SCHWARTZ SIGNS: Bloomingdale senior Sue Schwartz, a four-year member of the school's girls soccer squad and a starter the past two seasons, signed a scholarship with Florida Gulf Coast University, Bulls coach Sue Peet said.
Known for her all-around skills on the pitch, Schwartz's primary position for the Bulls has been attacking midfielder in their 3-5-2 formation. In 2008, she scored the lone goal in the Bulls' 1-0 win against Freedom in the Class 5A-District 8 semifinals to propel them into the title match against rival Newsome.
This year, Schwartz scored eight goals for Bloomingdale, which finished 13-4-2 and district runner-up of 5A-8. Schwartz, who played her club ball for the Manatee Magic, is a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish Society at Bloomingdale. At FCGU, she plans to major in business management.
