A Golden Opportunity

The article "Hatchery Plan Rejected" by Yvette C. Hammett (Metro, March 12) is an excellent description of a new research and educational facility for this side of Florida. This was clearly seen by the favorable position taken by the Environmental Lands Acquisition and Protection Program (ELAPP) general committee.

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) now has a golden opportunity to endorse the creation of this world-class redfish hatchery right here in our own back yard. Such a facility would enhance Florida's position in the scientific world community. It would also ensure continued leadership in Tampa Bay's conservation and educational efforts.

The Cockroach Bay Users Group (C-BUG) membership recommends that the 45 acres of the Rock Pond ELAPP site requested for the new hatchery facility be approved by the BOCC. And, in addition, that a team be assembled immediately by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to design the facility for extensive research, tourism and educational purposes similar to the popular TECO manatee facility in Apollo Beach.

Cruel Irony
I wonder how many people noticed the rather cruel irony of Thursday's page layout in the Tribune. On one page, we see two horrific stories of mass killings by crazed gunmen, one of whom had numerous firearms. On the opposite page, a nearly full-page ad of sales of firearms offered for discount prices. Unintentional? Frankly, I hope not.

Step Forward, NFL

Regarding "Gulf Will Be More Deadly If Data Buoys Are Deserved" (Our Opinion, March 12):

Why not ask the NFL to create a memorial to the lost players and reduce players' salaries by a couple minutes' worth of work per game and fund the buoys?

So often we see such groups begging and pleading for funds to improve our quality of life, and yet we continue to pay professional athletes a king's ransom to play a game. Here's a good opportunity to change that process.

Health Coverage For All

In response to Carrie Giest's letter, "No 'Enjoying' Health Insurance" (Letter Of The Day, March 12): You better start enjoying your private health care coverage while you still can. Once the government "gives" us coverage, you will be paying for covering your family and everyone else's as well.

Who do you think is going to pay the bill for socialized medicine? If you're working, you will be the first to feel the pinch. There is no doubt that taxes will be increased and deducted from the pay checks of the working people. Perhaps you should start tightening your belt now, because the $9,400 you pay a year to insure your family is sure to go up once the government gets involved.
