Anna Nicole Smith's lawyer-turned-boyfriend and two doctors conspired to provide the Playboy Playmate with thousands of prescription pills before her 2007 fatal overdose, California's attorney general said Friday.
"What we have in this case is a conspiracy among three individuals," Jerry Brown said at a news conference Friday. "Howard K. Stern is the principal enabler. Dr. Eroshevich and Dr. Kapoor are prescribing drugs excessively to a known addict and using false and fictitious names all in violation of the law and all in furtherance of a conspiracy."
Brown added, "This was done knowingly and it's done with tragic consequences."
Howard K. Stern and Sandeep Kapoor were released late Thursday after posting $20,000 bond. Charges include conspiracy, unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance and prescribing, administering or dispensing a controlled substance to an addict.
Khristine Eroshevich is expected to surrender Monday. Her attorney, Adam Braun, acknowledged Eroshevich wrote some of the prescriptions using fictitious names for Smith.
"It was done for privacy reasons," Braun said.
Prosecutors said the doctors gave thousands of prescription drugs to Stern, who then gave them to Smith.
Lakeland 'Survivor' Has No Regrets
Lakeland native Spencer Duhm lasted five weeks on "Survivor: Tocantins - The Brazilian Highlands" but the youngest player in the series' history was voted out when his tribe turned on him Thursday night.
But the 20-year-old University of Florida student called it a "dream come true" and the biggest adventure of his life.
Duhm said he has no regrets other than having to leave early.
"If I had to do it over I would make an alliance with different people," he said in a telephone interview.
He was doomed after his tribe, the Jalapao, lost an immunity challenge and they felt he was the weakest link. The challenge involved a makeshift game of keep-away. Balls were flung from a giant slingshot and members from the two tribes scrambled to catch them.
"My performance was pretty pathetic," Duhm said on the show.
Duhm says he was fine with the attention given to him from the media and online because he is gay. But he hid that fact from fellow competitors.
"I think they would have accepted me, but it might have been a subconscious negative and I didn't want to take a risk on something that might be a reason to vote me off," he said.
Now he is looking forward to finishing college.
"I had always wanted to be on that show and I did it," he says. "I wish I could have stayed longer but I am happy with what I did accomplish."
