After striking a pedestrian with her 1994 Dodge pickup last night, deputies say Amanda Schindler drove home with her children, called the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and reported that someone stole the truck's outside rear view mirror.
The incident started about 9 p.m. last night, according to a media release.
Schindler, 31, was driving her pickup on Fletcher Avenue near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
According to the release:
The victim was walking south across Fletcher Avenue when he was struck by the Dodge.
He died at the scene.
Schindler did not stop and drove home. Witnesses reported the suspect vehicle as a dark colored pickup. Once home, Schindler called the Sheriff's Office to report that someone has stolen her outside rear view mirror. Traffic homicide detectives responded to the residence, where they noted the defendant's vehicle matched the description the hit-and-run truck. Detectives also discovered blood on the driver's side of the pickup.
Schindler, in an interview, told detectives she saw the victim walking across the street but did not attempt to brake. She told deputies she was aware her truck had struck the victim and the impact had knocked off her truck's mirror. Detectives say Schindler told them she continued driving home because she was frightened about the incident and had her children in the truck at the time. She also acknowledged that her driver's license is suspended for failure to obtain insurance.
Schindler was arrested and transported to the Orient Road Jail.
She is charged with two felony offenses, leaving the scene of a crash involving death and driving with a suspended license. She was held at the Orient Road Jail this morning on $17,000 bail.
