Luxury spas attract visitors interested in improving their health and well-being.
But although it's time away from the real world, it's also a really good way to see what changes can and should be made at home to improve body, mind and spirit.
Here are some lessons from the Rancho la Puerta resort, just south of San Diego in the tiny town of Tecate, Mexico:
•Fruits, vegetables, beans, cereals, seeds and nuts star here, with small but satisfying servings of fish or shrimp at meals. American plates are dominated by large servings of meat, with veggies as supporting players. Flip that notion, and enjoy 4- to 6-ounce servings of meat, chicken, pork or fish with larger servings of veggies and whole grains.
•Try new foods for a variety of tastes and nutrients, such as flaxseeds sprinkled on cereal (good source of healthy omega 3 fats).
•Try less sugar, and alcohol. A vacation from indulgences is a living and learning adventure. Drink water instead of wine and think of the calorie savings! Agave nectar is a nice sweetener for coffee or tea. Since it ranks lower on the glycemic index, it's absorbed more slowly into the bloodstream.
•Try wearing a pedometer, like you do at a spa. You're supposed to get 10,000 steps a day as a fitness goal at a spa. Continue that at home.
