A 79-year-old man drowned in a pool at his daughter's house after a pool door alarm was switched off by a house guest, Manatee County deputies say.
Robert Walton and his wife moved into their daughter's home at 11750 Laurel Oak Ln. in Manatee County, deputies say, because of their advanced state of dementia.
Walton, deputies say, was known to get confused and wander off and the family would generally set the alarm to monitor his movements. But because the alarm was turned off, Walton was apparently able to wander undetected into the pool, according to a media release.
A pool bath door leading from Mr. Walton's bedroom to the lanai was found ajar. It is unknown at what time he had gone outside, but he was wearing shoes with his pajamas. This morning he was found a floating in the pool by a guest of the family. He was unresponsive. CPR was performed by someone at the house after Walton was removed from the pool. The CPR was continued by EMS units, but Walton could not be revived.
There was no sign of foul play.
