A 2-acre brush fire broke out behind the Museum of Science and Industry this afternoon, but firefighters worked quickly to ensure the blaze didn't disrupt the Renaissance Festival under way there, Tampa fire officials said.
The blaze broke out at about 1:40 p.m. in the wooded area behind the museum, 4801 E. Fowler Ave., officials said. Smoke was billowing from a wooded area about 100 feet from the grounds where the festival is taking place, officials said.
In about 90 minutes, firefighters used a variety of methods to control the blaze, officials said. Among them was a tractor from the Division of Forestry which was used to cut a fire break around the burnt area, fire officials said. Still, some smoke wafted into the festival grounds, they said.
An investigator from the Tampa Fire Marshal's Office is looking into the cause of the fire.
