Baseball: Dorminy Lifts Alonso To 5-1 Win

TAMPA - Alonso got a strong performance from pitcher Thomas Dorminy, and the Ravens capitalized on some errant Wharton defense to post a 5-1 home victory Saturday afternoon.

Four of the Ravens' five runs were a direct result of seven Wildcats errors, four of which were committed in the second inning that allowed Alonso to take a 2-1 lead.

"We've kind of been fighting that battle all year long - inconsistency in the infield at almost every position. We're just not getting the job done," Wharton coach Scott Hoffman said.

Dorminy scattered three hits and struck out 10 in five innings, and the junior left-hander turned in some of his best work while protecting that early one-run lead. Wharton (4-5) got leadoff doubles in the third and fifth innings by Joseph Evans and Ryan Gawrych, respectively, but Dorminy was able to keep the tying run 90 feet away in both cases. He struck out the side in the third and closed the fifth with a fly out and two strikeouts.

"When they had guys in scoring position, he shut them down," Alonso coach Landy Faedo said of Dorminy, who improved to 3-0. "He's a good pitcher. We're real fortunate to have some good arms on the team."

Another Wharton error led to a two-run fifth for Alonso, and Tito Martinez singled home a run in the sixth to make it 5-1. Jordan Huchro and Jose Fernandez each worked a scoreless inning of relief to nail down the Ravens' (8-0) win.

Tyler Ding had two hits, an RBI and scored once for Alonso, while Gawrych brought home the Wildcats' lone run on a fielder's choice in the second.
