WESLEY CHAPEL - It was a Wildcats night Friday.
Hosting the Wildcat Fast Times track meet, Wesley Chapel High School captured both the boys and girls team competitions in the 23-team event.
The Wildcats boys team placed first with 127.20 points to second place Sickles with 114. The Wesley Chapel girls squad won with 128 points beating second-place Ridgewood's 100.
Even the MVP's of each gender was a Wesley Chapel representative. Dan Hicks and Dana Cannon each won the top honors for individual athletes, both winning three separate events.
Hicks won three jumping events, the high jump (5-10), long jump (20-06.75) and triple jump (41-10.5).
Despite winning all three events, Hicks seemed somewhat disappointed he didn't perform better.
"I could have done better in the triple jump. I thought I could have done the 44.7 which is the school record and could have done better in the high jump. I was jumping too early and every jump I took I was hurting my ankle. I was stretching and everything but it seemed like, well, maybe it wasn't my night."
"I could have done better but I'm glad I got first in everything I did."
Wesley Chapel boys coach Brian Colding was aware of Hicks' tender ankle but thought it was just a "minor, temporary nuisance."
"It's just wear and tear," Colding said of Hicks' gimpy ankle. "He does three jumps for us and this is the last night for that. We will back off the jumps until the districts. We need to give him a rest. Right now he is at a point where it's time to turn up the training a notch. He has become complacent with practices but that's not to say he's not working hard. He is. We need to fine tune some things in practice so he can make the push to the postseason."
Cannon won the 400 (59.58), 800 (2:35.30) and the triple jump (4-15.20). She too has high standards and goals thinking she could have had better times and distances.
"Overall I am happy but I think my triple jump could have been better," Cannon said. "I wasn't hitting the board. I was missing the board by hitting two inches short each time. If I was hitting the board right, I would have hit the school record which is 36-feet. "
