Published: March 15, 2009

WESLEY CHAPEL - Chad Reubens came in a little heavy Wednesday. The Zephyrhills High weightlifter normally lifts in the 129-pound class, but he didn't quite make that weight at the Wesley Chapel High meet. No problem, though.
Reubens simply moved up to the 139-pound class and won. He had a 240-pound bench and a 135-pound clean and jerk for a 375-pound total.

"I feel like I can probably place at state," Reubens said. "It's fun. It relieves stress."

The senior, who has plans on attend the police academy, is coming back from suffering two torn muscles in his back. He expects to lift 285 on the bench and 225 on the clean and jerk.

"He's doing good," Zephyrhills coach David Brown said. "He lost a lot of weight to get into the weight class he is in now. I expect him to qualify for state."

JOYER SETS RECORDS: Wesley Chapel's Kamran Joyer looked like a state champion and may have given folks a preview of the state meet. The Wildcat heavyweight set school and family records Wednesday at the Wesley Chapel dual meet.

He set personal records with a 425-pound bench press and a 300-pound clean and jerk in only his second meet of the season. The senior not only beat his personal best, but he set Pasco County and family records in the process. His 725-pound total beat younger brother Hunter's total of 720 set last year. Hunter, a sophomore, was second in the state in the 238-pound class last year, but has a chest injury and cannot lift this year.
Kamran Joyer said Wesley Chapel coach John Castelamare helped him with his clean-and-jerk technique.

Joyer, who was ninth in the state in the heavyweight class in 2008, has signed a letter of intent to play football next fall at the University of Florida. He weighs 295 pounds.

WESLEY CHAPEL WINS MEET: Wesley Chapel took the dual meet 51-28 over Zephyrhills High. Castelamare was happy that seven of his lifters took first place in their weight class.

"Patrick Pate 238 pounds did a good job," said Castelamare. "A lot of boys did real well tonight. Jon Mahan 154 did well. We go for PBs personal bests. Jeremy Henderson 169 did an excellent job. Sean White 183 did a good job. These are all good firsts against a good weightlifting team Zephyrhills. Brendon Ferguson 199 came from wrestling and did a good job. Patrick Pate and Chris Charles make that 238 nice and solid."

RESULTS: Team totals - Wesley Chapel 51, Zephyrhills 28; Individual winners - 119-Kurt Geddes (Z) 170-95-265; 129-Kevin Koth (WC) 105-70-175; 139-Chad Reubens (Z) 240-135-375; 154-Jon Mahan (WC) 210-155-365; 169-Jeremy Henderson (WC) 275-185-460; 183-Sean White (WC) 235-185-420; 199-Travis McDonald (Z) 220-170-390; 219-Brendon Ferguson (WC) 200-210-410; 238-Patrick Pate (WC) 310-235-545; Heavyweight-Kamran Joyer (WC) 425-300-725.
