Gray Scores 32 To Lead West To 114-87 Victory

TAMPA - Saturday's Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game hosted by Tampa Prep had everything anyone would expect from two teams made up of the county's top high-flying, 3-draining, ball-handling seniors. It had a slew of dunks - gloriously made and missed - 3-pointers, steals and alley-oops.

It also had Berkeley Prep guard Johnathan Gray.

Gray led a monster second half for the West, sinking five 3s in the half and leading his team to a 114-87 victory.

"You are playing with a whole bunch of guys who are the best from their teams," Gray said of the game. "This is just a great environment to play in."

Gray, the West team's MVP, finished with a game-high 32 points.

The two-period, 40-minute game had no running clock, giving all involved ample opportunity to shine. The East jumped to a 12-0 advantage, but the West then used good defense and eventually took a 53-49 halftime lead.

Gray and his teammates never looked back, starting the second half with a 16-4 run and continuing with strong defense and solid rebounding, eventually wearing out the East players.

"Tonight was just one of those days when you just throw it up and try to get into a rhythm," Gray said.

"Today it just felt like once I got a few in it was easy to keep going on from there."

The West got key contributions from Chamberlain center Matt Kendrick, with 13 points, and Berkeley Prep's Christian Reintgen, with 12. Robinson's Reggie Sweatman and Tampa Bay Tech's Frederick Drayton each scored 11 points.

The East was led by team MVP Gerrick Leath of Middleton, who scored 25 points. Bloomingdale's Joe Raga contributed 18 points, and Tampa Prep's Jake Haslam and Armwood's Rashad Davis each scored 13.
