PORT CHARLOTTE - With yesterday's news that Chipper Jones is out of the World Baseball Classic with a strained muscle in his side, there's a good chance Evan Longoria could be called into service for Team USA for the final round of the tournament.
Jones' departure leaves the U.S. with only one third baseman, David Wright, but they can't make a roster move during this round. Should the U.S. advance by winning its game tomorrow night in Miami, though, Longoria would seem a logical choice to replace Jones. The Rays' third baseman hasn't heard anything yet, though.
"I talked to Davey Johnson right before the thing started and he said if they needed somebody I would be the first in line," Longoria said this afternoon. "If it happens, it happens – I'll be ready to go. I'd be happy to go."
