Fires Pop Up In Ruskin, Polk
Brush fires in Ruskin and Haines City kept firefighters busy Sunday.
A brush fire near 14th Avenue S.E. and 15th Street S.E. in Ruskin forced the mandatory evacuation of a nearby mobile home park.
The 150-acre brush fire, about the size of a city block, damaged at least one abandoned house used by migrant workers, said Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Capt. Bruce Delk.
The blaze caused no injuries to residents or firefighters. Firefighters had it under control by about 10 p.m. Sunday.
Hillsborough County Fire Rescue and state Division of Forestry crews battled the fire, Delk said.
More than 30 firefighters responded to the brush fire, which started about 3:30 p.m. as two separate blazes that merged into one, Delk said.
In Haines City, several rounds of ammunition were going off in a burning mobile home when Polk County firefighters arrived. The 10-acre blaze on Polk City Road destroyed that mobile home and threatened several others.
Crews from Polk County Fire Rescue and the city's fire department contained the fire, Polk County public safety spokeswoman Heather Smith said in a statement.
Forestry officials dug fire lines around the blaze to keep it from spreading.
Man Shoots 4, Kills Himself
MIAMI - A man shot four people to death at a family gathering early Sunday, then went home and killed himself, police said.
The man may have been upset because his wife had left him, according to a sergeant with the Miami Police Department's homicide division.
Officers got a call shortly after midnight that numerous shots had been fired and a red pickup had been spotted leaving the scene. They arrived and found four bodies.
Juan Sosa, who lives a block away, was out walking his dog early Sunday when he heard two shots and saw people running toward him, screaming. Then he heard as many as two dozen more shots and ducked behind a large tree to call police.
