Recent letters to the Tribune have dealt with socialized health care. The most amusing was the "Letter Of The Day" submitted by a Canadian woman who by her own admission spends a great deal of time getting "free" care. Ailments included two knee replacements, bowel surgery, ankle surgery and numerous other problems. I wonder what kind of program the Canadian government has to try to keep people healthy.
My cousin works for the German (socialized) healthcare system. She is not a highly paid worker, yet the government takes over 50 percent of her earnings in taxes to support a system that will no doubt (due to the demographics of the aging population) become an even greater burden to workers. There is no free ride.
The government is not the solution; the government is the problem. The free market is the only solution to providing services. Competition drives down costs. It is only government interference in private health care that has driven up costs.
Imagine a health insurance company that can selectively (without government interference) insure people who do what is necessary to stay healthy. You have to imagine it because the government doesn't allow it to exist.
We already have government-controlled health care. It is exactly as Karl Marx said: "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." And as the depression worsens, the government will see to it that the productive members of our society who have created the prosperity we all enjoy are sacrificed to those in need. It is a race to the bottom, and there is no place to hide. Where is Galt's Gulch?
