A New Jersey man died Sunday night when he lost control of his car in eastern Hernando County and slammed into a tree, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
A passenger, 17-year-old Jonathan Colon of Clermont, was seriously injured in the accident that happened 16 miles east of Brooksville, the patrol said.
The patrol said Jose Bardales, 20, of Linden, N.J., was heading east on State Road 50 near the Sumter County line when his 2003 Toyota left the pavement about 10:20 p.m., went into a spin and hit a tree on the driver's side.
Colon was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries.
Neither person was wearing a seatbelt, the patrol said.
No charges were filed, and investigators have not determined whether alcohol was a factor.
