TALLAHASSEE - The plan all along was to appeal. That was unless Florida State officials found a solution through conversation with the NCAA over sanctions that require the school to vacate victories over its academic-misconduct case.
FSU president T.K. Wetherell didn't find that solution and will announce during a news conference today that the school will go before the NCAA Division I Infraction Appeals Committee regarding the sanction that could all but end Bobby Bowden's pursuit of being major college football's winningest all-time coach.
Bowden could lose 14 wins from the 2006 and 2007 seasons when players who took the class played. More than two dozen football players were suspended for four games after the school discovered the cheating.
Bowden has 382 wins, one less than Penn State's Joe Paterno - the all-time leader in major college coaching wins.
The NCAA also played the school on a four-year probation, double what FSU imposed, and a modest adjustment of scholarship deductions already put in place for 10 sports, including football.
Top Recruit Picks Tennessee
Running back Bryce Brown signed a letter-of-intent with Tennessee on Monday, ending weeks of speculation after he let a scholarship offer from Miami expire.
The Wichita, Kan., native is the third high-profile recruit signed by Coach Lane Kiffin after the Feb. 4 national signing day, further raising the profile of his first Volunteers recruiting class.
