LAKE PLACID - After handing over several firearms to a Highlands County sheriff's deputy, a 60-year-old man pulled another handgun and shot himself in the presence of the deputy Monday.
Thomas E. Kaye of 60 Williams Road, Lake Placid, was being served with a repeat violence injunction and was relinquishing the firearms per court order around 5:10 p.m. when the incident happened, according to the Highlands County Sheriff's Office.
After the shooting, the deputy immediately called dispatch to send an ambulance and additional law enforcement personnel, and started to administer first aid to Kaye, according to the report.
Emergency Medical Services called for Aeromed to transport Kaye to Tampa General Hospital, but due to his condition, Aeromed diverted to Highlands Regional Medical Center, where Kaye was pronounced dead, the report states.
The incident is currently under investigation by the Highlands County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Unit.
