TAMPA - A staff sergeant at MacDill Air Force Base is accused of beating a 4-year-old boy with a belt over bad behavior at school, officials said.
Johnny Henley Carter, 30, of Riverview, was babysitting for his ex-girlfriend about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday when the beating occurred, an affidavit states.
Carter learned of a report from the child's teacher about bad behavior in school and disciplined the boy, striking him repeatedly on his legs and buttocks with a belt, the affidavit states.
The beating caused bruising, the affidavit states.
Carter and the child's mother have a 10-month-old child in common, the affidavit states.
Tampa police arrested Carter at the woman's apartment shortly after midnight, charging him with felony child abuse.
He was released from the Orient Road Jail this morning on $2,000 bail.
Carter is an Air Force staff sergeant at the base.
A base spokeswoman said earlier today that he is connected with Central Command. However, a Central Command spokesman said that Carter in fact works at the U.S. Special Operations Command.
