St. Pete Beach police this afternoon identified the man who fell from a sixth-story balcony at a hotel Tuesday night as David K. Senior, 26, of Illinois.

Senior is in fair condition at Bayfront Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. He was still in the emergency room this afternoon, and a woman identifying herself as his mother answered his telephone.

"He's in stable" condition, she said, before declining further comment.

Deputy Chief Dean Horianopoulos said officers received conflicting reports from the people in Room 614 at the Grand Plaza Motel, 5250 Gulf Blvd., as to what happened. Alcohol was a factor in the incident.

In one version, Senior was sitting on the balcony, with his feet facing the room, when he fell over backward, Horianopoulos said. In another version, he was outside the balcony holding onto the railing with his hands.

Senior was not a guest at the hotel, said Roxann Vasalakis, manager of the Grand Plaza. Rather, he had met the nephew of the man renting the room and had come back to the room to socialize, she said.

At 11:15 p.m., he fell from the sixth-story balcony and plummeted four stories before landing on a second-story landing.
