TAMPA - Is Tampa doing enough to conserve energy and reduce its carbon footprint?
Determining that will be one of many tasks awaiting a new citizens task force created by Mayor Pam Iorio that over the next several months will work on implementing a new citywide energy conservation initiative with Tampa Electric Co., the city's main utility.
The task force will come up with recommendations for energy conservation, renewable energy and climate-change initiatives for implementation by city officials and TECO.
Iorio created the task force in response to criticism from some city council members and environmental groups over her renewal of a franchise agreement with TECO. Several council members wanted the city's negotiating team to push for more green policies and renewable energy programs and force the utility to reduce its reliance on coal burning.
The newly appointed members of the task force are C.J. Reynolds, Colin Hill, Daniel Grabowski, Darren Brinkley, David Reed, Dean Head, Dena Gross-Leavengood, Ed Turanchik, Jennifer Doerfel, Larry G. Eagan, Maggie Wilson, Marc Eichenholtz, Robert Armstead, Sharon Hanna-West, Stephen Koontz, Sue Lyons and Terrance Bradford.
The group will hold its first meeting from 3 to 4:30 p.m. March 31 in the mayor's conference room on the first-floor of the Tampa Municipal Office Building, 306 E. Jackson St.
All meetings of the task force will be open to the public.
