If you have a sweet tooth for Girl Scouts cookies, you'll have another week to satisfy the craving.
The Girl Scouts announced this week that they are extending cookie sales until March 29. They were scheduled to end Sunday.
Although cookies are reportedly down across the country this year, the extra week was added by popular demand, said Susan Barnes, spokeswoman for Girl Scouts of West Central Florida.
"We have had just tremendous support" from the community, Barnes said.
Barnes said preorders of cookies were down about 3 percent locally, but she didn't have figures since booth sales started in late February. Advance sales were down nationwide as much as 20 percent in some places. Local scout leaders have said their girls are pushing harder to sell cookies this year, hoping to keep sales as high as possible.
Barnes said with the extra week, the scouts should be able to make up the difference.
Cookie booths are set up throughout the council's eight-county region, including Citrus, Hernando, Hillsborough, Marion, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Sumter counties.
This year's cookie varieties include Do-Si-Dos, Dulce de Leche, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Samoas, Sugar Free Chocolate Chip, Tagalongs, Thin Mints and Trefoils. They cost $3.50 per box.
Customers not only get a tasty snack, their purchases are also "investing in the girls," Barnes said. Money from the sales supports Girl Scout programs.
The organization has held cookie sales since the 1930s.
