ST. PETERSBURG - A 40-foot-long, 5-ton oak tree limb fell on a house this morning, punching two holes in the roof and pulling down power lines.
No one was injured, officials said. St. Petersburg Fire Rescue responded to the incident, which happened about 9:15 a.m. at 516 16th Ave. N.E.
Firefighters said homeowner Bill Burtchaell, 68, told them the crash sounded like a bomb and shook the whole house. He was working on his computer when the limb crashed through his bedroom ceiling.
"I've never seen anything like this that wind wasn't somehow involved," fire rescue Lt. Dave Deschryver said in a statement. "The branch looked rotten and just snapped."
Progress Energy was called to repair the power lines.
