The folks behind Aldi discount supermarkets are taking on the big guns of beauty by launching a line of budget beauty products. With lipsticks for under $2 and cleansers for $2.99, the chain hopes to lure bargain shoppers looking for products that make them look like a million bucks.

Aldi says the beauty products are very popular in Europe and can compete with U.S. lines such as L'Oreal, Olay and Helena Rubenstein. Aldi's Lacura facial products cost up to 95 percent less.

The Lacura skin-care line includes bioflavonoids, coenzyme Q10, a special retinol complex, hydrating sea minerals, pro-vitamin B5, vitamins A and C and other active extracts. The line includes hydrating facial cleaners, hydra complete mask, revitalizing eye gel, and pearl and shine gentle lip care. Prices range from $1.99 to $4.99.

Pricier doesn't always mean prettier. We're going to see whether Aldi's skin-care line lives up to its claims by letting the Beauty Board gals try them out. Look for our reviews in an upcoming issue of 4you.

Unemployed? You Can Get A Free Haircut

If you're looking for a job, you want to make a good first impression.

Frank Prescott wants to do his part to help by giving you a free haircut if you live in St. Petersburg.

Starting Tuesday, and every Tuesday through April 28, Prescott's NUMBER9 salon will give free haircuts to individuals who are unemployed and actively searching for work. (If you're looking for a trim before a night out on the town, don't go).

"Our salon is doing well," Prescott says. "So we wanted to reach out and give a boost to our community the best way we can - through doing great hair."

The salon, located at 321 10th Avenue N., is offering the haircuts by appointment only; call (727) 822-6463.

Do Your Beauty Products Make The Cut?

When it comes to beauty products, what works for you may not work for someone else. Some products are better performers than others, but it's hard to tell from the marketing which ones are tried and true.

Cosmetic Executive Women, a nonprofit organization made up of 4,000 professionals in the beauty industry, tries to navigate through the slew of new beauty products each year with its Beauty Insiders Choice Awards.

This year, 550 products were nominated, including moisturizers, eye creams, bath products and sunscreens. The group whittled them down to 140 finalists in 28 categories.

The winners won't be announced until May 1, but if you want to see whether your favorite beauty item made the first cut, go to www.cew.org. We'll bring you the winners when they're announced.

If you have a beauty item worth hot pursuit, call (813) 259-7656 or e-mail ccabrera@tampatrib.com. Try on the blog at TBO.com, Keyword: Hot Pursuits, for all things fashion and beauty.
