TAMPA - Authorities upped the charge today against a man accused of beating his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter to death because she wouldn't stop crying.
Kenneth Lopez now is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Gabrielle Randel. Lopez, 21, originally was arrested on an aggravated child abuse charge in the March 7 incident.
Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said Lopez wrapped Gabrielle in a towel and began beating her when she wouldn't go to sleep or stop crying.
The child's mother called authorities the next day when she noticed the toddler wasn't breathing. Gabrielle was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The couple was living at the Homestead Inn on Beaumont Center Boulevard.
Lopez is being held without bail.
