NEWARK, N.J. - New Jersey is suing Verizon, claiming the telecommunications company used "deceptive and misleading" marketing practices for its FiOS television, telephone and Internet services.
The lawsuit filed Wednesday by the state Consumer Affairs Division states that Verizon New Jersey failed to provide advertised promotional gifts when consumers signed up for FiOS service.
New Jersey claims Verizon charged consumers higher prices for service than those quoted in door-to-door solicitations and ads.
The lawsuit states that Verizon also charged activation fees after consumers were told those costs would be waived.
State officials say they have received nearly 270 complaints.
Verizon has faced similar complaints in Florida about FiOS marketing, blamed in part on overzealous door-to-door sales representatives, officials said, and promotional deals customers found too elusive.
In Florida, state utility regulators want to fine Verizon $4.56 million for breakdowns in the company's traditional telephone service.
Verizon is contesting those claims.
