TAMPA - With the recession raging, are people still visiting Tampa for a vacation? Answers could come today.
At 3:30 p.m., Tampa Bay & Co., the county visitors bureau, will release its 2008 Hillsborough County Visitor Impact Study. It will detail how many people visited the county, how much money and jobs they contributed to the local economy, and their travel habits, including how much they spend and how long they stay.
AAA Auto Club South also will give its forecast for future travel. According to one tourism consultant, the Bay area's tourism industry may be a bellwether sign for the Bay area economy.
Walter Klages, who consults for Pinellas County's visitors bureau, has said the nation's economy was in a recession two years ago, before many others made that claim. Recently, he told a Tribune reporter. "Tourism will lead Pinellas out of the local recession, starting by late summer."
