Three South Tampa homes near railroad tracks were affected by fire this afternoon.

Shortly after 3 p.m., Tampa Fire Rescue responded to a reported brush fire in the 3100 block of San Pedro St. Firefighters saw flames spread from brush to a townhouse and knocked the flames down.

The townhouses at 3107 and 3109 San Pedro received about $10,000 damage, a Tampa Fire Rescue news release states. No one was home when the fire started.

Firefighters then responded less than two miles away, to 2014 S. Habana Ave, where another brush fire was spreading to a home. No damage estimate is immediately available, but the home wasn't seriously damaged, firefighters say.

The affected homes are about 50 feet from train tracks.

"Investigators say it will probably be very difficult to determine if the fires started from a spark caused by a passing train or from a carelessly discarded cigarette," the release states. "However, they will continue to work on the cause."
